Weekly Preview

Well, I think Fall has officially set in as I see signs all over town.  Leaves of many colors covering my backyard, harvested pumpkins on front porch steps and the days getting shorter/nights getting longer ( even though it doesn’t feel that way ).  It’s great that Fall is in full swing!  This week we begin to talk about seasonal changes and how they not only effect was but also animals and plants.  This unit will take 2 weeks to complete.

In reading this week, our focus will be the letters q, l, and j.  We will talk about those letters briefly and move onto the short u sound.  Our last short vowel to cover.  We will also work on summarizing our reading.  For us that means, including the important parts of a story during a retell.  We will also work on story structure.  This includes the terms characters, setting, problem and solution.  We will continue to read in small group and work on word study in class.   We will incorporate summarizing into our writing this week.

This week in math, we will continue to learn about magnitude.  We have learned that this means to make a Reasonable Guess of an amount of objects.  We will scoop out a pumpkin and make a guess of how many seeds we can hold in our hands.  We will also use candy corn to measure magnitude using Fall shapes.  We will then move onto Place Value.  This will include identifying numbers and counting to 50 and how they can be represented using base ten blocks.
