This week we will....

Resume reading groups!!!!  The class is excited about this and so am I.  The groups have been changed yet again to reflect each child's current reading level.  We will continue to read in small group and do reading as a whole group.  Miss Davis has taken over teaching whole group reading with my help.  This week they will focus on story structure and long o/u, and ending sounds.

One the things I noticed during reading testing the last few weeks is that the class as a whole is struggling with making connections while reading.  So, I decided to have our writing focus be linked with making connections in literature.  We will do a mini-lesson on how to make connections to the world, to other books, and to ourselves while reading.  We will also be writing about the connections we make during reading.  Hopefully, that will help us become making connections experts!

In math this week, we will work on story problems, addition and subtraction.  We will also work on plus zero and plus one.  The class should be pretty good with doing these basic facts since flash cards have already been sent home for those.  We will take a timed test at the end of the week.

In Science, we will talk about what a scientist looks like and begin to teach the scientific method.  We will do lots of fun experiments to practice this process.

Things to Remember:
Report Cards will be coming home on Thursday:  inside the report will be a list of sight words that your child missed on the last spelling test.  Please practice these as they will have a retest next week!

Feb. 3- Tuesday is conference night.  If you would like a conference please email me.
Feb. 6- Half day for elementary

Please continue to send in empty cereal boxes for Valentine's day fun.

Have a great week!

This week will be short but important!  We have lots to do and lots to learn.  This week will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he helped to shape our country.  We will talk about his importance for the entire week.

This week will continue to do Fountas and Pinnell reading testing.  We will also continue to read whole group.  We will work on identifying cause and effect while reading.  We will also continue to work on reading, spelling and identifying long i words.  This week we will also take the county writing prompt and test spelling words.  These words will be on the homework that will come home on Tuesday.  We will focus on spelling these sight words this week rather than word study.  Word study will resume next week.

In math this week, we will take a brief math facts assessment on Friday.  We will also continue to work on place value.  The class is doing such a great job with recognizing tens and ones that we have begun to work on expanding numbers.

A few things to remember for this week:

Friday is a half-day.  The students will be dismissed at 12:30.
This week is the last week in this 9 weeks.  Report cards will come home next week.
Valentine's day is approaching and we will be making valentine holders in class but will need empty cereal boxes,  Each child will need 1 box.  If possible, please send in empty boxes whenever possible.  We will decorate them in school.

Have a great week!

Hi Families!

BRRR.....it may be cold outside but we're heating up with learning in our class!  We had a good first week back and are continuing to rock and roll!

This week in reading we will learn how make generalizations while reading.  We will learn how to do this out of context first and then connect it to reading.  We will continue to do word study and everyone will learn long a and hard/soft c and g.  We will also begin Fountas & Pinnell reading tests.  This is just a formal running record.  A way for the county to assess each child's reading level at this time of the year.  Your child will be familiar with is as we have been doing informal running records throughout the year.  This testing will take place during our normal small group reading time.  No worries though, with having Miss Davis, she will be pulling students to read with them one on one while I do testing!  What a great advantage we have!  We will continue to learn how to write opinion papers during writing time.

In math this week, we will be learning more about place value.  We will do some hands-on activities as well as paper/pencil assignments.  We will learn how to represent a number in serveral different ways including expanded form.  This week with homework,  I have also attached math flashcards.  I ask that you spend NO MORE than 1-2 minutes a night review those flashcards with your child.  We will start to have math fast facts tests starting next week.  This will be an assessment of 1 minute where your child will write answers to the fast facts being reviewed.  This will be a grade on the first grade report card.

We will continue to review facts about winter in Spotsylvania.  We are learning about how winter affects animals and people.

Have a great week!

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year!  I hope that you all have enjoyed the break and are ready to get back to work!  I know I am!

Here is what you can expect in the coming back to school week.....

Miss Davis will be with us full time as our student teacher.  She will be working to complete a research project for her Master's Degree Program.  This will require that some students have their voices recorded.  There will only be audio recording and no video.  If you would not like your child to participate with this, please email me to let me know.  Please be assured that I will be working very closing with Miss Davis to assure that our children receive the best education possible.  I am excited to have "extra time" to devote to the class too!

We will be working on learning to compare and contrast in reading as will as recognizing digraphs while reading and writing, sh, ch, th, wh.  We will also be learning how to write opinion papers.  This will be fun!  We will continue to read both with the reading series and reading groups.  We will also continue to work on word study.  Please continue to support this effort at home with daily homework.

Math will be reviewing calendars, graphs and patterns.  This 9 weeks will teach the students how to work with growing patterns.

We will also investigate day/night and seasonal change that occurs here in Spotsylvania county.  We will talk about how the weather affects the way we dress, the activities we do and how the animals in our area adapt to the changing seasons.

Upcoming Dates:
